João’s farm Sitio Canaã has deep historical roots. They go all the way back to the beginning of the 18th century when it was still under Dutch control.

In 2005 our export partner ‘Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza’ began working with João Hamilton. The idea was to plot, and taste coffee from different parts of the farm. One particular spot on João’s farm caught their attention, this area of land always tasted more citrusy and expressive than the rest. Research revealed the trees here to be of Sumatra (Typica) variety - a completely different varietal to the rest of the farm.

The Sumatra variety was the first lineage of Arabica to be planted in Brazil; its genetics go back to 1727 when it was gifted to a Brazilian Sergeant by the name of Francisco de Melo Palheta.

This João Hamilton lot is 100% Sumatra variety from trees that are approximately 100 years old. The age and lineage of them is incredibly rare, and only possible because our export partner 'FAF' painstakingly tasted each section on João's farm, identifying and isolating a particular group of trees that expressed differently.

Lingering notes of strawberries & chocolate.
