In 2008 we started working with Gachatha and since then we have not missed a single harvest. Its intense purple “Hubba Bubba” grape flavour, makes this coffee one of the most anticipated arrivals here at Mecca Alexandria.
The Gachatha Factory was formed in 1963 and it is situated on the slopes of the Aberdare mountain range, Karundu location, Nyeri county about 150 km north of Kenya’s capital Nairobi and has a reputation in the region for upholding a strong ethical code.
The Gachatha area is densely populated, so every effort is made to minimise impact. The factory treats all water in soak pits to ensure no contamination runs into the local waterways, which are a source of drinking water. The community also places great importance on protecting the indigenous trees that remain in the area, so that the local bird life can be sustained.
Smallholder farmers pick ripe cherries and bring them to the factory, then the skins are removed and the cherries pulped. After pulping, the coffee is fermented overnight to break down the sugars, before it is cleaned, soaked and spread out on raised drying tables.
Intense and deep grape flavour throughout.
