The Barretto family has been growing coffee in the Mantiqueria region of Brazil since as far back as the 19th century. As a child, Francisco's father taught him the intricacies of farming, especially producing coffee, and in 2021 he and his wife acquired a piece of land in the Mogiana region close to the city of Poços de Caldas. After this Sitio Sassafras was born.
Nestled in lush farmland 1400 MASL, Sitio Sassafras originally was used for cattle farming due to its biodiversity and large area covered by natural forests and water springs. Named after the Sassafras tree, a popular native species of southern Brazil, the farm, like the tree, reminds Fransisco of his home and growing up learning about the craft from his father. During the harvest season, he now has some additional help from his son, continuing a proud tradition for the Barretto family.
We are honoured to be able to play a role in showcasing this special coffee. Francisco's coffee stood out on the table when we first tasted it for its comforting milk chocolate and sweet caramel aftertaste - It's the perfect coffee to start the day with.
